2024 Theme

Building – birthplace of James Clerk MaxwellÌý(1831-1879), Scotland’s greatest theoretical physicist.
Modern technology – electronics, radio, TV, mobileÌýphones etc. – are based on his work, which included
a unified theory of electricity, magnetism and light.ÌýAmong other achievements, he also:
- Created and superimposed red, green and blueÌýprojections to display the first colour image – ofÌýa tartan ribbon (1861)
- Deduced the constitution of Saturn’s rings
- Introduced statistics into a dynamical theory ofÌýgases
- Analysed the operation of governors, producingÌýthe first theory of feedback control

- Open house with guides on hand.
- Viewing of artefacts, memorabilia & posters relating toÌýMaxwell’s life and work.
- Four rooms will be open, on ground and first floors,Ìýrestored as far as possible to reflect the Georgian era.

Maxwell's work is at the centre of all the digital communication networks we use today - radio, TV, mobile phones, radar, GPS etc.
