Ìý

Leslie is an ancient settlement thought to have developed as an agricultural township that serviced the Royal estate of Fettykil, established by King Malcolm IV no later than 1178.

Ìý

Historians suggest this settlement was close to a church that existed on or around the present site from at least the 10th century, indicating the name Fettykil is derived from GaelicÌýcll meaning ‘Wooden Kirk’. Ìý ÌýIt is one of eleven Fife place-names that contains this Gaelic name which form a cluster centred in East Fife, the only area of Scotland south of Inverness to contain such a name.

Ìý

ÌýThere will be a guided tour of the historic graveyard where remnants of the mediaeval church may survive as part of the Douglas and Rothes Mausoleums.

Ìý

Refreshments, tea, coffee, soft drinks, will be available at Leslie Town Hall for a small charge.
